The Miniatus Grouper (Cephalopholis miniata) is an aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its striking bright orange-red coloration covered with vivid blue spots, creating a stunning visual display in the aquarium. Males are typically larger and dominant, often defending territories and forming harems of females, while females and juveniles are smaller and may eventually change sex to become males, a fascinating trait known as protogynous hermaphroditism. These groupers can grow up to 20 inches (50 cm) and should be housed in aquariums of at least 180 gallons (680 liters) to provide sufficient swimming space and territory.

A well-structured environment is essential for their well-being; provide ample live rock, caves, and hiding spots, along with an open swimming area. Stable water parameters should be maintained with salinity around 1.020-1.025, temperature between 72-79°F (22-26°C), and pH of 8.1-8.4, and a secure lid is necessary as these fish are prone to jumping. Their diet should consist of a variety of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality pellets, ensuring they receive proper nutrition. With consistent care, the Miniatus Grouper becomes a striking and fascinating centerpiece in a suitably sized marine aquarium.
