Mimic Saddle Puffer Filefish

The Mimic Saddle Puffer Filefish (Paraluterus prionurus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its remarkable mimicry of the Valentini Puffer, unique black saddle pattern, subtle coloration, compact size, and distinctive body shape.

Males typically exhibit slightly larger size and more pronounced saddle markings, while females and juveniles are smaller with softer, more subdued patterns that resemble miniature versions of the adults.

They reach about 4 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Their habitat should include a sandbed, live rock, and ample hiding spots, while also leaving open swimming areas for exploration. Stable water parameters are essential: salinity ~1.020-1.025, temperature ~72-79°F, and pH ~8.1-8.4. A secure lid is recommended, as this species is prone to jumping.

The diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, small pellets, and occasional algae. With proper care, the Mimic Saddle Puffer Filefish makes a striking and standout addition to any marine or reef aquarium, offering both visual interest and fascinating behavior.
