Miles Lionfish

Miles Lionfish (Pterois miles) is an aggressive predatory species that is not reef-safe as it will consume any fish, shrimp, or crab small enough to fit in its mouth. This impressive predator displays bold reddish-brown and white vertical banding across its robust body with dramatically elongated, fan-like pectoral fins and venomous dorsal spines that create an imposing silhouette. Distinguished from other volitan-type lionfish by its slightly more subdued coloration and distinctive white spotting on the pectoral fins, this species combines elegance with raw predatory power. It can reach about 13-15 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 120 gallons or more, with plenty of open swimming space, moderate water flow, stable water parameters, and extreme caution around the venomous spines which can deliver dangerous stings requiring immediate medical attention. Its diet should include a mix of live or frozen meaty foods—whole fish, large shrimp, crabs, squid—as well as marine pellets once established, though many specimens initially prefer live prey and may require gradual weaning to prepared foods.
