Midnight Parrotfish

The Midnight Parrotfish (Scarus coelestinus)  a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking deep blue to black coloration with hints of turquoise, powerful beak-like jaws, and large adult size.

Males typically display a more intense and uniform midnight-blue coloration with faint lighter markings, while females and juveniles are often lighter with mottled or patchy patterns that darken as they mature.

They reach about 30 inches (75 cm) in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 300 gallons due to their size and swimming activity. Provide ample live rock for grazing, strong open swimming space, and a sandy bottom if possible, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is essential since parrotfish are powerful and may jump.

Their diet should consist of marine algae, macroalgae, enriched pellets, and occasional meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or finely chopped seafood to supplement nutrition. With proper care, this fish makes a bold, centerpiece addition to large, well-maintained aquariums.
