Midnight Dogface Pufferfish

The Midnight Dogface Pufferfish (Arothron cf. nigropunctatus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking black-and-white coloration, unique spotted patterns, and charming facial features. Males typically display slightly more pronounced body markings, while females and juveniles tend to be smaller with subtler patterns. This species can reach about 12–14 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 125 gallons to provide ample swimming space. Providing a setup with a sandy substrate, plenty of live rock for hiding, and open swimming areas is essential, along with maintaining stable water parameters (salinity~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4) and a secure lid as puffers are known to jump. Their diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality pellets, along with occasional algae. With proper care, the Midnight Dogface Pufferfish becomes a fascinating and standout addition to a marine aquarium, captivating hobbyists with its personality and striking appearance.
