Meteor Cardinalfish

The Meteor Cardinalfish (Apogon selas) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its translucent pinkish-grey body with broad reddish to golden-brown midlateral and head stripes, a distinctive large black spot on the caudal peduncle, and subtle internal bluish markings. Males typically display more vibrant coloration and slightly elongated fins during breeding, while females and juveniles have softer coloration and shorter fins.

They reach about 3 to 4 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.

Provide a sandy substrate with ample live rock, caves, and crevices for hiding, along with open swimming space. Maintain stable water parameters with salinity around 1.020-1.025, temperature between 72-79°F, and pH from 8.1-8.4. A secure lid is important as this species can jump.

Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and quality pellets or flakes. With proper care, the Meteor Cardinalfish makes a beautiful and peaceful addition to reef and marine community tanks.
