McCosker's Flasher Wrasse

McCosker’s Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus mccoskeri) is a rare gem among flasher wrasses—peaceful, reef-safe, and absolutely show-stopping when mature. Males exhibit blazing orange bodies with iridescent blue horizontal lines, a yellow belly, elongated dorsal filaments, vivid yellow and red accents on fins, and intense color flashes during courtship. Females and juveniles are softer in tone but still beautifully striped and subtly colorful. It only reaches about 3-4 inches. Best kept in tanks of 55 gallons or more, with deep fine sand, lots of live rock for hiding, moderate water flow, stable reef-parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025; temperature ~72-78°F; pH ~8.1-8.4), and above all a tight lid—this species is a jumper. Diet must be varied and high-quality: live or frozen mysis/brine shrimp, finely chopped marine meats, and premium marine pellets to bring out its full brilliance. Because it’s not always available and in limited numbers, getting your hands on one means making your reef tank truly exceptional.
