Maxima, Red Sea Blue/Turquoise Ultra

The Maxima, Red Sea Blue/Turquoise Ultra (Tridacna maxima) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its striking electric blue and turquoise mantle coloration, intricate patterns, and vibrant ultra-grade coloration unique to Red Sea specimens.

Males typically exhibit more intense and vibrant coloration with slightly smaller shells, while females/juveniles tend to have subtler hues and grow slightly faster with less vivid patterns early on. They reach about 8 to 12 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 50 gallons.

Provide a stable rock or clam cradle for firm attachment, strong lighting (metal halide or high-output LEDs) to support their photosynthetic symbionts, and stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is recommended to prevent tank disturbances, although Maxima clams rarely jump.

Diet should consist primarily of photosynthesis supported by intense lighting, while juveniles may benefit from supplemental phytoplankton or marine snow. With proper care, this clam makes a striking, colorful, and standout addition to reef aquariums, especially prized for its unique Red Sea ultra-grade coloration.
