Mauritian Clownfish (Amphiprion chrysogaster) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe, admired for its unique dark brown-to-black coloration with contrasting orange face and fins, along with its rarity in the aquarium trade.
Males typically remain smaller and take on the “subordinate” role in the social hierarchy, while females/juveniles are larger, more dominant, and eventually become the breeding female in a harem system.
They reach about 5–6 inches (12–15 cm) in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 40–55 gallons for a pair, larger if kept in a community reef.
Provide ample live rock for hiding, a sandy substrate, and open swimming space, with the option of a host anemone (such as Heteractis magnifica or Stichodactyla gigantea), though not strictly required. Maintain stable water parameters: salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4, and ensure a secure lid since clownfish may jump.
Diet should consist of a varied mix of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafoods, high-quality pellets, and some algae-based foods.
With proper care, this fish makes a rare and standout addition to the aquarium, prized by collectors and reef enthusiasts alike.
