Masked Shrimp Goby

The Masked Shrimp Goby (Amblyeleotris gymnocephala) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its distinctive black facial markings (resembling a mask), elongated body, pale base coloration with faint striping, and its symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimp. Males typically display slightly more vivid coloration and may show increased territorial behavior during breeding, while females and juveniles are generally smaller and less intensely marked. They reach about 4 to 5 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons, ideally larger if paired with a shrimp or kept in a community setting.

Provide a fine sandbed for burrowing, ample live rock for hiding spots, and open space for movement, especially if paired with a pistol shrimp. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and use a tight-fitting lid to prevent jumping. Diet should consist of meaty fare such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality marine pellets or frozen foods. With its unique appearance and fascinating behavior, the Masked Shrimp Goby makes a standout and engaging addition to peaceful reef aquariums.
