My species/animal is a fish — the Masked Bannerfish (Heniochus monoceros). It is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its dramatic black-and-white coloration, elongated dorsal fin that forms a flowing “banner,” and the distinct dark mask-like marking over its eyes. This species also features a faint horn-like bump on the forehead, adding to its unique appearance.

Males typically are visually similar to females, with no clear external differences, though subtle size or behavioral distinctions may be observed during breeding or territorial displays. Females/juveniles resemble adults closely, though juveniles often have shorter dorsal filaments and slightly softer coloration that develops with maturity.

They reach about 7–8 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 100 gallons.

Provide plenty of live rock for foraging and hiding, open swimming space, and a soft sandbed, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since many species are prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, sponge-based frozen foods, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes. They may occasionally graze on algae and coral polyps, and with proper care this fish makes a standout addition to the aquarium.
