Marine Betta Grouper

The Marine Betta Grouper (Calloplesiops altivelis) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its deep brown to black body covered in star-like white spots, elegant dorsal and anal fins, and unique behavior of mimicking a Moray Eel when threatened. Males typically grow slightly larger and develop broader fins, while females and juveniles remain smaller and less robust, though visually similar. Adults reach about 8 inches in size and require a minimum tank size of 55 gallons to thrive. Their natural shy nature means they appreciate aquariums with ample live rock, caves, hiding spots, and dim lighting, providing both shelter and security. A secure lid is essential, as this species is known to jump when startled.

This fish thrives under stable water parameters, including a salinity of 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH of 8.1–8.4. Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine carnivore pellets or frozen preparations. With proper care, the Marine Betta Grouper becomes a stunning and long-lived centerpiece, offering both visual appeal and fascinating behavior, making it a standout addition to reef or fish-only aquariums.
