Marginate Damselfish

The Marginate Damselfish (Dascyllus marginatus). It is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its attractive yellow-gray body with blue margins on the fins, small adult size, and hardy nature.

Males typically defend territories aggressively, especially during spawning, and display stronger coloration when courting, while females/juveniles are smaller, slightly less territorial, and often school together for protection. They reach about 3 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons (larger if keeping groups).

Provide ample live rock with hiding spots and crevices, along with open swimming space, and maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is important, as damselfish can jump when startled. Diet should consist of a varied mix of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, marine pellets, and algae-based foods. With proper care, this fish makes a hardy and colorful standout addition to the aquarium.
