Marginalis Butterflyfish (Chelmon marginalis) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking vertical orange bands, elongated snout, and delicate body shape that makes it resemble the well-known Copperband Butterflyfish. It is most often found in shallow coastal reefs and estuaries, where it uses its slender snout to pick at invertebrates hidden among corals and rocks.
Males typically show brighter banding and slightly larger size with more elongated snouts, while females/juveniles have softer coloration and remain smaller and more rounded in body shape. They reach about 7–8 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 120 gallons, preferably with plenty of established live rock for natural foraging opportunities.
Provide ample live rock, caves, and hiding spots, along with open swimming areas. Like many butterflyfish, they require stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4) and a secure lid, as they may dart and jump if startled.
Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, marine pellets, and algae-based preparations. They may initially be finicky eaters, so offering live or frozen foods can help them acclimate. With proper care, the Marginalis Butterflyfish makes a rare and captivating addition to a large, mature marine aquarium.
