Manybar Goatfish

Manybar Goatfish (Parupeneus multifasciatus) is a peaceful to semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, as it may consume small ornamental shrimp and crabs but poses no threat to corals or larger invertebrates. This striking goatfish displays a pale yellow to cream body adorned with multiple distinct dark vertical bars running across its sides, creating a bold striped pattern complemented by the characteristic twin barbels used for constantly probing sand and crevices in search of small prey. The crisp barring pattern and active foraging behavior make it both visually appealing and endlessly entertaining to observe. It can reach about 10-12 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 125 gallons or more due to their active swimming nature and foraging requirements, with a deep sand bed for natural hunting behavior, stable water parameters, and adequate open swimming space, though they're generally peaceful toward most fish tankmates. Its diet should include a mix of meaty foods—mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, quality marine pellets—supplemented with small live foods like blackworms or feeder shrimp, as this carnivorous species requires multiple daily feedings to support their active metabolism and constant foraging instincts.
