Magenta Dottyback

My species/animal is a fish, the Magenta Dottyback (Pictichromis porphyreus). It is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe, admired for its brilliant magenta-to-purple coloration, compact size, hardy nature, and bold personality despite its small stature.

Males typically may grow slightly larger and display brighter coloration, while females/juveniles tend to be smaller and slightly less vivid in tone. They reach about 3 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons.

Provide live rock with plenty of hiding spots to help reduce aggression and establish territory. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and ensure a secure lid, as this species can be prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality pellets or frozen foods, and with proper care this fish makes a vibrant and hardy addition to the aquarium.
