Lyretail Wrasse (Thalassoma lunare) is a hardy, fast-swimming wrasse celebrated for its bold personality and striking appearance. Juveniles are often green with a single dark spot at the base of the dorsal fin, while adults mature into dazzling blends of neon green, turquoise, and blue with radiant facial stripes and an elongated lyre-shaped tail that gives the species its name. This wrasse can grow up to 10 inches and requires a large aquarium of at least 150 gallons, with ample open swimming space, rocky structures for cover, and a sandy bottom. A secure lid is absolutely necessary, as they are powerful jumpers. Semi-aggressive by nature, they are best suited for FOWLR or predator systems with similarly robust tankmates, as they may prey on or harass small invertebrates. Their diet should be protein-rich and varied—mysis, brine shrimp, krill, clams, chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen or pellet blends will keep them healthy and intensify their natural colors.
