Lyretail Hogfish (Bodianus anthioides). It is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its brilliant coloration, lyre-shaped tail, bold patterns, active swimming behavior, and hardy nature.
Males typically exhibit brighter red coloration, a more defined yellow tail, and slightly larger size, while females/juveniles are smaller with paler tones and less dramatic fin extensions until they mature.
They reach about 8–10 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 120 gallons. Provide ample live rock with caves, hiding spots, and open swimming space. A secure lid is essential, since hogfish are known jumpers. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4).
Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. With proper care, this fish makes a hardy, colorful, and active standout addition to large marine aquariums.
