Lyretail Dottyback

My species/animal is a fish, the Lyretail Dottyback, Male (Pseudochromis steenei). It is an aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its bold coloration, defined lyre-shaped tail, and strong territorial personality. This dottyback is particularly striking due to its contrasting deep body color and bright facial markings, and is best kept by experienced aquarists.

Males typically display stronger coloration, more prominent lyretail extensions, and increased territorial behavior, while females/juveniles tend to have duller coloration and smaller fins. They reach about 5 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 55 gallons, ideally with other robust tank mates or in species-only setups.

Provide plenty of live rock and hiding spots to establish territory, along with some open swimming space. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and use a secure lid as this species is known for jumping.

Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, copepods, and high-quality pellets, and with proper care, this fish makes a bold and commanding addition to the aquarium.
