Longnose Batfish

Longnose Batfish (Ogcocephalus corniger) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe as it poses no threat to corals or most invertebrates, though it may consume small crustaceans and worms that venture too close to its hiding spots. This bizarre and fascinating species displays a flattened, pancake-like brown body with intricate patterns and textures, plus a distinctive elongated snout (rostrum) that gives it an almost prehistoric appearance as it "walks" along the substrate using its modified pectoral fins. The cryptic coloration and unusual body shape make it a master of camouflage among sand and rubble. It can reach about 9 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 75 gallons or more with a deep sand bed and plenty of rubble or shell fragments for burrowing and camouflage, gentle water flow, stable water parameters, and subdued lighting as this nocturnal species prefers dimmer conditions. Its diet should include a mix of live or frozen meaty foods—small fish, shrimp, crabs, marine worms, mollusks—presented directly near its hiding spots, as this ambush predator is a slow, methodical feeder that may require target feeding and patience during acclimation.
