Long Nose Hawkfish

Longnose Hawkfish (Oxycirrhites typus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, making it an excellent choice for many reef systems as it poses no threat to corals but will prey on motile invertebrates and tiny fish while focusing primarily on small crustacean hunting. This elegant hawkfish displays a striking white body with distinctive red horizontal and vertical bands forming a crisp grid pattern, complemented by a prominent, needle-like snout that gives it its common name, used for tirelessly probing crevices for small prey. The intricate red-and-white grid coloration with striking snout and distinctive perching behavior combined with alert hunting behavior make it both a stunning centerpiece and highly effective natural predator of bristleworms and other microfauna. It can reach about 5 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 30 gallons or more due to their active perching and hunting nature, with abundant live rock and branching corals for perching opportunities, stable water parameters, and a tight-fitting lid to prevent the escape leaps this species is known for, though they're generally very personable and often develop engaging personalities with their owners. Its diet should focus heavily on meaty foods—mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, chopped clam, quality carnivore pellets—with occasional live supplements like feeder shrimp, as this primarily carnivorous species requires constant access to protein-rich animal matter for optimal health and will provide excellent nuisance organism control while maintaining their brilliant coloration and distinctive markings.
