Long-barbel Goatfish (Parupeneus macronemus) is a peaceful to semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, as it may consume small ornamental shrimp and crabs but poses no threat to corals or larger invertebrates. This elegant goatfish displays a silvery-white to pale pink body with subtle yellow tinges and most notably features exceptionally long barbels that can extend well beyond the length of its body, which it uses dramatically while foraging through sand and rockwork in constant search of small prey. The impressive barbel length and graceful swimming style make it a unique and captivating addition that's always actively exploring. It can reach about 12-14 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 150 gallons or more due to their active swimming nature and need for foraging space, with a substantial sand bed to accommodate their extensive barbel use, stable water parameters, and adequate swimming room, though they're generally peaceful toward most tankmates. Its diet should include a mix of meaty foods—mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, marine pellets—along with small live foods like blackworms or ghost shrimp, as this carnivorous species requires multiple daily feedings and benefits from variety to maintain their active foraging behavior and distinctive barbel sensitivity.
