Lettuce Nudibranch

The invertebrate Lettuce Nudibranch (Elysia crispata) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its bright, ruffled, lettuce-like cerata, vibrant green coloration, and unique ability to photosynthesize through ingested algae (kleptoplasty).

Males typically display the same coloration and patterns as females, as this species is hermaphroditic, meaning individuals possess both male and female reproductive organs. Juveniles are usually smaller with less pronounced ruffling but develop the full frilled appearance as they mature.

They reach about 2–3 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons. Provide ample live rock with natural algae growth and stable surfaces for grazing, along with a secure lid since some nudibranchs may climb near the waterline.

Their diet should consist primarily of macroalgae (such as Bryopsis, Derbesia, and other hair algae species), as they are obligate herbivores and do not typically accept prepared foods like pellets or frozen foods.

With proper care, this species makes a standout, eco-friendly addition to reef aquariums, often serving as a natural algae controller while adding striking visual interest.
