Leopard Toby Pufferfish

The Leopard Toby Pufferfish (Canthigaster leoparda) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking leopard-like spots, compact size, and bold personality. Males typically display more vibrant spotting and may show brighter coloration during courtship or dominance displays, while females/juveniles are less vivid with smaller, more subdued spots.

They reach about 4 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Provide ample live rock with caves and crevices for hiding, a sandy substrate, and some open swimming space, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is essential since they are known to jump.

Diet should consist of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, small crustaceans, chopped seafood, high-quality pellets, and marine algae. They also benefit from crunchy foods (like shelled shrimp or clam) to help wear down their continuously growing beak-like teeth.

With proper care, the Leopard Toby Pufferfish makes a unique and eye-catching addition to a marine aquarium, especially in a fish-only-with-live-rock (FOWLR) setup or cautious reef tank.
