Large Scale Leatherjacket Filefish

The Large Scale Leatherjacket Filefish (Cantheschenia grandisquamis) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its distinctive large scales, elongated body, subtle earthy coloration, and unique swimming behavior. Males typically display slightly more pronounced coloration along their fins and a sturdier, more robust body, while females and juveniles are generally smaller, more streamlined, and less vividly colored.

They reach about 10–12 inches as adults and should be housed in aquariums of at least 120 gallons. The tank should provide a mix of sandbed, live rock, hiding spots, and open swimming space, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4) and a secure lid, as this species may jump when startled.

Their diet consists of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality pellets, and algae, allowing them to thrive and display natural behaviors. With proper care, the Large Scale Leatherjacket Filefish becomes a striking and standout addition to a marine aquarium.
