Juv Red Coris Wrasse (Coris gaimard) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, famous for its jaw-dropping transformation—from fiery juveniles dotted with bold white “saddles” outlined in black to adults splashed with deep, dark tones, vivid blue spots, a yellow tail, and multicolor fins. Males tend to get brighter, with sharper contrasts and more intense blue edging; females and juveniles are equally beautiful but subtler in hue. It reaches about 6-8 inches in aquariums (though wild specimens can grow larger). Best kept in tanks of at least 125 gallons, with a deep, fine sand bed for burying (especially overnight), lots of live rock for hiding and exploring, open swimming space, and a tight lid since it’s a known jumper. Diet should include plenty of meaty fare—mysis, brine shrimp, shellfish bits—and supplement with high-quality marine pellets or frozen foods once the fish is feeding reliably.
