Jewel Damselfish

The Jewel Damselfish (Microspathodon chrysurus) is an aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its brilliant electric-blue juvenile coloration with white spots, transitioning to a darker, jewel-like body with golden hues as adults.

Males typically grow larger, display more territorial behavior, and develop more intense coloration during maturity, while females/juveniles are smaller and often more vibrantly colored with iridescent blue spots across their bodies.They reach about 8–10 inches (20–25 cm) in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 100 gallons to accommodate their size and territorial nature.

Provide ample live rock for hiding spots and territory establishment, along with open swimming space, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since many damselfish are prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of a varied mix of meaty foods (mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods), quality pellets, and marine algae/spirulina for balance.With proper care, this fish makes a striking and hardy addition to large aquariums, though it’s best suited for experienced aquarists due to its aggressive territorial nature.
