Japanese Kelpfish Blenny

Japanese Kelpfish Blenny (Pseudoblennius marmoratus). It is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its cryptic coloration, mottled patterns, ability to camouflage among algae/kelp, and compact size.

Males typically show stronger territorial behavior, brighter mottling, and may defend a chosen rock or crevice, while females/juveniles are smaller, more subdued in color, and less aggressive.

They reach about 4–5 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Provide ample live rock, hiding spots, and crevices to mimic their natural kelp/rocky habitat, along with open swimming areas. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp 72–79°F, pH 8.1–8.4) and a secure lid since they may jump.

Diet should consist of small meaty foods (mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood), quality pellets, and occasional algae-based offerings. With proper care, this fish makes a unique and striking addition to the aquarium, especially for enthusiasts seeking something rare and cryptic.
