Japanese Dragon Moray Eel

The Japanese Dragon Moray Eel (Enchelycore pardalis) is an aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its stunning coloration, intricate red-and-white patterns, elongated jaws, and dragon-like appearance.

Males typically exhibit slightly larger, more robust heads with more pronounced jaw structures, while females/juveniles are slimmer, with subtler coloration until maturity. They reach about 36 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 125–180 gallons.

Provide ample live rock with caves, crevices, and hiding spots, along with a secure aquascape that allows the eel to retreat and feel safe. A tight-fitting, escape-proof lid is essential, as these eels are strong and prone to escaping. Stable water parameters should be maintained: salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 72–79°F, and pH 8.1–8.4.

Their diet should consist of meaty foods such as silversides, squid, shrimp, fish, and other protein-rich marine items (not algae or pellets). Feeding should be done with tongs to avoid accidental bites, as their needle-like teeth can deliver serious injuries.
