Jade Filefish

The Jade Filefish (Paramonacanthus sp) is a semi-aggressive species that is generally reef-safe with caution, making it suitable for established marine aquariums. It is admired for its striking jade-green coloration, intricate body patterns, slender elongated form, and delicate fin extensions, which make it a visually captivating centerpiece in a tank.

Males typically display more vibrant coloration and may have slightly elongated dorsal or anal fins, especially during courtship, while females and juveniles are slightly smaller with more muted colors and less pronounced fins. Adults reach about 6–8 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75 gallons to provide ample space for swimming and grazing.

This species thrives in tanks with a sandy substrate, plenty of live rock, hiding spots, and open swimming areas. Maintaining stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4) is crucial, and a secure lid is recommended since Jade Filefish are known to jump.

Their diet should consist of a variety of meaty foods and algae, including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, marine pellets, and marine algae. With proper care, the Jade Filefish becomes a striking and unique addition to any reef or marine aquarium.
