The Ignitus Anthias (Nemanthias ignitus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its fiery red to orange coloration, graceful swimming patterns, and dynamic shoaling behavior that adds vivid movement to reef tanks. Males typically display more intense coloration with elongated dorsal and caudal fins, and are slightly larger than females, establishing dominance within the group, while females and juveniles are smaller, less vividly colored, and more inclined to school together. They reach about 3–4 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 70 gallons, ideally in groups with one male and multiple females to replicate natural social dynamics.
Provide abundant live rock for hiding and perching, along with a large open swimming area for midwater schooling. A secure lid is recommended, as anthias are active swimmers and prone to jumping. Maintain stable water parameters: salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, and pH ~8.1–8.4.
Their diet should consist of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped meaty foods, and high-quality pellets or flakes formulated for carnivorous marine fish, ideally fed several times per day due to their high metabolism. With proper care, the Ignitus Anthias makes a colorful and energetic centerpiece for reef aquariums, enhancing both visual appeal and activity in the midwater zones.
