Hybrid Maxima x Squamosa Clam

The Hybrid Maxima x Squamosa Clam (Tridacna maxima x squamosa) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its brilliant coloration, intricate mantle patterns, unique shell morphology, and hybrid vigor.

Males typically exhibit more vivid mantle coloration and slightly smaller shell size, while females/juveniles often grow faster and display softer color contrasts in early stages. They reach about 8 to 12 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75 gallons.

Provide a sandy substrate or stable rockwork for attachment, high-intensity lighting (as they rely heavily on photosynthetic zooxanthellae), and stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4). A secure lid is recommended if housed with fish species that may disturb clams.

Diet should consist primarily of photosynthesis via strong lighting, but juveniles may benefit from supplemental phytoplankton or marine snow. With proper care, this clam makes a striking and unique addition to the aquarium, combining the bold beauty of T. maxima with the hardy growth of T. squamosa.
