The Honeycomb Grouper (Epinephelus merra) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking honeycomb-like pattern of dark hexagonal spots, compact size, and hardy nature. Males typically develop deeper coloration with more pronounced spotting and can become more territorial as they mature, while females and juveniles are smaller with lighter, less defined markings. They reach about 10–12 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75 gallons. Provide ample live rock for hiding spots, a moderate sandbed, and some open swimming space, while maintaining stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4) and a secure lid since they are capable jumpers. Their diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality carnivore pellets. With proper care and a well-structured environment, this uniquely patterned grouper makes a captivating and resilient addition to a marine aquarium.
