The Honeycomb Eel (Gymnothorax sp.) is an aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its striking honeycomb-like black-and-white pattern, elongated body, and impressive predatory presence.
Males typically display similar size and coloration to females, with no clear external dimorphism, while females/juveniles share the same honeycomb pattern but may appear slightly slimmer and less robust in head structure.
They reach about 36 inches (3 feet) in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 125–180 gallons. Provide ample live rock, caves, and hiding spots where the eel can retreat during the day, as well as a deep sandbed for burrowing behaviors. A secure, tight-fitting lid is essential, as this species is prone to escaping. Maintain stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4).
Diet should consist of meaty foods such as fresh or frozen shrimp, squid, octopus, silversides, and other marine fish, offered with feeding tongs to avoid accidental bites. Over time, some may accept prepared frozen diets.
With proper care, this eel makes a stunning and charismatic addition to large predator or specialty aquariums, though caution is needed when housing with smaller fish or invertebrates, as they may be viewed as prey.
