The Hippopus Clam is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its thick, heavy shell structure, striking mantle coloration with earthy brown, green, or cream patterns, and its durability compared to other tridacnid clams.

Males typically do not exhibit obvious external differences, as these clams are protandric hermaphrodites (they start life as males and later develop female reproductive capability). Juveniles and smaller individuals function primarily as males, while larger adults develop both male and female gametes.

They reach about 12–14 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 100 gallons. Provide a stable sandbed or rock base where they can securely attach with byssal threads.

Maintain stable water parameters:

Salinity: 1.020–1.025

Temperature: 72–79 °F

pH: 8.1–8.4

A secure lid is recommended for aquariums, although clams are not prone to jumping like fish.

Diet: Hippopus Clams are primarily photosynthetic filter feeders, hosting symbiotic zooxanthellae in their mantles. They rely heavily on strong lighting (metal halide, T5, or LED reef lighting) to photosynthesize. In addition, they benefit from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton and dissolved organics, especially when small or in lower-light systems. With proper care, this clam makes a standout and long-lived addition to reef aquariums, admired both for its hardiness and striking mantle appearance.

International Aquatics Quarantine & Guarantee: All fish are checked by marine vets, given a formalin bath, and held for 14 days in copper-treated systems. We feed Selcon-soaked food with Kanaplex and Metroplex during quarantine. Unless marked, all livestock comes with our 15-Day Guarantee. You will receive a video of your fish eating before shipment. On request, we also send photos/videos after arrival at IA. Some species are import-to-order (3-10 business days). Many common species are already cleared or near the end of QT.

Several species will be import-to-order and may take anywhere from 3-10 business days to secure. Once your fish is secured, you will be notified, and the quarantine process will then begin.
