The Hi Fin Red Banded Goby (Stonogobiops nematodes) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its striking red and white banded coloration, elongated dorsal fin, small size, and symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimp. Males typically have more vivid coloration and slightly longer fins during breeding periods, while females and juveniles are usually paler with shorter fins. They reach about 2 to 2.5 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 20 gallons.
Provide a fine sandbed with plenty of live rock and hiding spots, especially burrowing spaces for the shrimp companion, and moderate open swimming space, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4), and a secure lid since many gobies are prone to jumping. Diet should consist of small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality pellets or flakes. With proper care, this goby makes a standout addition to reef aquariums, especially when paired with its shrimp partner.
