The Hell Fire Anemone (Actinodendron sp.). It is an aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its fiery orange to reddish coloration, branching tentacle structure, and striking, almost flame-like appearance.
Unlike fish, these anemones do not have distinct males and females in the same way; they reproduce both sexually and asexually, so “male” vs. “female” appearance is not clearly distinguishable. Juveniles are typically smaller, less vibrant, and with shorter tentacles, while adults display the full fiery pattern and long stinging tentacles.
They reach about 12–18 inches in diameter and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75–100 gallons. Provide a deep sandbed and stable live rock anchoring points, with ample open space to prevent stings to nearby corals or fish.
They require stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and strong water movement for proper tentacle extension.
Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, silversides, krill, and chopped seafood, though they also host symbiotic zooxanthellae for photosynthesis. Feed once or twice per week to maintain health.
With proper care, this anemone makes a dramatic showpiece in the aquarium, though its potent sting and aggressive nature mean it should only be kept by experienced aquarists in species-specific or carefully planned predator/large FOWLR tanks.
