The Harptail Blenny (Meiacanthus mossambicus) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its slender body, striking yellow-and-white coloration, contrasting black eye stripe, and unique forked “harp-shaped” tail.
Males typically show slightly brighter coloration and may display more confidently in the aquarium, while females/juveniles are similar in appearance but often a bit smaller and less bold.
They reach about 4 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Provide ample live rock with hiding spots, open swimming space, and a secure lid since they are known jumpers. Stable water parameters are essential: salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp 72–79°F, pH 8.1–8.4.
Diet should consist of a varied mix of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes. With proper care, the Harptail Blenny is a hardy, attractive, and peaceful fish that makes a standout addition to both reef and community aquariums.
