Half and Half Chromis

The Half and Half Chromis (Chromis iomelas) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its distinctive half-black, half-white coloration, active schooling behavior, and hardy nature.

Males typically display slightly more vivid coloration and may become more territorial during spawning, while females/juveniles look very similar but are often smaller and less aggressive.

They reach about 3 inches (7–8 cm) and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons (larger if keeping groups). Provide ample live rock for hiding spots along with open swimming space, stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since many chromis are prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of a varied mix of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, quality marine pellets, and occasional algae-based foods. With proper care, this fish makes a hardy, active, and visually striking addition to reef and community aquariums.
