Gulf Blenny

The Gulf Blenny (Ecsenius pulcher) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe, admired for its charming personality, algae-grazing habits, elongated body, and subtle yet attractive coloration with intricate facial markings.

Males typically show slightly brighter coloration and may display territorial posturing, while females/juveniles are smaller with more subdued tones. They reach about 4–5 inches in adult size and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons.

Provide ample live rock for grazing and hiding spots, along with a stable sandbed and open swimming areas. Keep stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79 °F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and use a secure lid since blennies are known jumpers.

Diet should consist of algae-based foods (macroalgae, seaweed sheets, spirulina), supplemented with mysis, brine shrimp, copepods, and high-quality marine pellets. With proper care, this fish makes a hardy, active, and beneficial algae-eater that stands out in the aquarium.
