The Guitar Shovelnose Ray (Rhinobatos lentiginosus) is a semi-aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its elongated, guitar-shaped body, distinctive spotted patterns along the dorsal surface, and flattened pectoral fins that allow it to glide smoothly over the substrate. Males typically are slimmer with slightly narrower discs and develop claspers near the pelvic fins, while females and juveniles are broader-bodied, more robust, and grow faster in size during the early stages.
They reach about 36–42 inches in total length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 500–800 gallons, as they require ample bottom space and swimming room. A fine sandbed is essential to prevent abrasions to their delicate undersides, along with open swimming areas and some rockwork or hiding spots for rest. Stable water parameters are important, with salinity at 1.020–1.025, temperature between 72–79°F, and pH of 8.1–8.4. A secure lid is recommended, since rays may jump or attempt to climb the tank walls.
Diet should consist of meaty marine foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, small crustaceans, chopped squid, fish, and clam meat, with occasional supplementation of high-quality sinking marine pellets. With proper care, the Guitar Shovelnose Ray makes a striking and unique centerpiece for advanced aquarists, showcasing its elegant swimming and fascinating patterns.
