Grunting Toadfish

The Grunting Toadfish (Allenbatrachus grunniens) is an aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its cryptic coloration, stocky body, bottom-dwelling behavior, and unique ability to produce audible "grunting" sounds—especially during feeding or when disturbed.

Males typically display more territorial behavior and may vocalize more frequently, while females/juveniles are generally less aggressive but still predatory and reclusive. They reach about 10–12 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 75 gallons.

Provide a soft sandbed, plenty of live rock or artificial structures for hiding, and low lighting to replicate their natural environment, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020-1.025, temp ~72-79°F, pH ~8.1-8.4). A secure lid is essential, as this species may jump or lunge unexpectedly.

Diet should consist of meaty offerings such as silversides, shrimp, krill, and small fish; they can be trained to accept frozen or prepared foods, but may prefer live prey initially. With proper care, this fish makes a standout addition to a predator or species-only aquarium, offering both unique vocalizations and a prehistoric appearance.
