The Green Sea Hare (Dolabrifera sp.) is a peaceful species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its green mottled coloration, unique body shape, and algae-grazing abilities. Males typically resemble females in both size and appearance, while juveniles are smaller and more delicate, often more vulnerable to predators and environmental changes.
They reach about 3β5 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 30 gallons. Provide a sandy substrate and ample live rock for grazing, along with hiding spots to reduce stress. Stable water parameters are essential (salinity ~1.020β1.025, temp ~72β79Β°F, pH ~8.1β8.4), and a secure lid is recommended since many sea hares are capable of climbing out of the tank.
Diet should consist primarily of natural algae growth on live rock and substrate, but they may also accept supplemental dried seaweed (nori) and algae-based foods. With proper care and an established tank rich in algae, the Green Sea Hare makes a unique and beneficial addition to the aquarium, helping to control nuisance algae growth.
