Green Razor Wrasse

Green Razor Wrasse (Xyrichthys splendens) is a fascinating and unusual wrasse species, easily recognized for its elongated, laterally compressed body and sharp “razor-like” forehead slope. Its body shimmers in metallic green with hints of blue and red depending on lighting, and males often display even more intense coloration during display. This species grows up to about 9 inches and should be housed in aquariums of at least 125 gallons, with a deep fine sand substrate (essential, as they bury themselves when frightened or to sleep), ample live rock for cover, and plenty of open swimming space. A secure lid is required, as razor wrasses are notorious jumpers. Semi-peaceful by nature, they do well in community reef settings provided tankmates are not overly aggressive, and they are completely reef-safe with corals and most invertebrates. Their diet should include small meaty fare such as mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, and finely chopped seafood, offered multiple times a day to match their natural grazing behavior.
