Green Mandarin Dragonet (Synchiropus splendidus) is one of the most iconic and mesmerizing reef fish, cherished for its psychedelic blend of vivid green, blue, orange, and red patterns that look painted by hand. Peaceful and reef-safe, this species typically reaches about 3 inches in length and is best suited for aquariums of at least 30 gallons, though larger mature reef systems are strongly recommended to provide a stable supply of natural food. They thrive in tanks rich with live rock and sand, where they can hunt for copepods and amphipods throughout the day. Mandarins are known for their shy nature and slow feeding habits, so they should be housed with peaceful tankmates and never placed in competitive environments. While many feed exclusively on live pods, some can be trained to accept frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, or even prepared pellets over time, but a consistent pod population remains key to their long-term success. With the right environment, they bring unmatched beauty and serenity to a reef aquarium.
