Green Bird Wrasse (Gomphosus varius) is a semi-aggressive species prized for its long, beak-like snout, striking color phases, and bold personality. Males are typically emerald-green to bluish-green with a bluish head and bright yellow bar behind the head, while females are cream-white anteriorly with black speckling and darker coloration toward the rear; juveniles show distinct patterns with two black stripes along their sides. It reaches about 11-12 inches in adult size. Best kept in tanks of at least 100-125 gallons, with deep fine sand substrate, abundant live rock for hiding and grazing, open swim space, and secure cover since this fish is active and known to jump. Diet must be carnivorous: live or frozen meaty fare like shrimp, small crustaceans, mollusks, and enriched foods; they may also use their snout to extract prey from crevices.
