Grayface Moray Eel

The Grayface Moray Eel (Gymnothorax thyrsoideus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its distinct gray facial coloration, mottled body patterns, elongated form, and secretive yet captivating presence.

Males typically display a slightly bulkier head structure and broader body, while females/juveniles tend to be slimmer with more defined mottling along the body. They reach about 24–28 inches in length and should be housed in aquariums of at least 125 gallons.

Provide ample live rock for caves and hiding spots, a soft sandbed, and some open swimming space. Ensure stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure, tight-fitting lid since this eel is prone to escaping.

Diet should consist of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, silversides, krill, and other marine-based frozen foods. With proper care, this eel makes a standout, exotic, and hardy addition to a marine aquarium.
