The Gray Triggerfish (Balistes capriscus) is a semi-aggressive species that is not reef-safe, admired for its sturdy body, muted gray coloration with subtle patterns, and unique trigger spine mechanism.
Males typically exhibit slightly larger size and more pronounced body markings, while females and juveniles are smaller with less distinct coloration. They reach about 18–24 inches as adults and should be housed in aquariums of at least 180 gallons. Provide a sandbed, ample live rock, hiding spots, and open swimming space, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temperature ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a secure lid since many triggerfish are prone to jumping. Diet should consist of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods, high-quality pellets, and occasional algae. With proper care, this fish makes a robust and striking addition to a large marine aquarium.
