Goldflake Angelfish

The Goldflake Angelfish (Apolemichthys xanthopunctatus) is a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its brilliant golden body speckled with black “flakes,” contrasting blue lips, and graceful angelfish form.

Males typically develop slightly larger bodies with more vibrant coloration and deeper blue highlights, while females/juveniles remain smaller and display subtler golden tones with less pronounced markings.

They reach about 10 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 180 gallons. Provide ample live rock for grazing and hiding, open swimming space, and secure hiding spots, along with stable water parameters (salinity ~1.020–1.025, temp ~72–79°F, pH ~8.1–8.4), and a tight-fitting lid since they can be prone to jumping.

Diet should consist of a varied mix of mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, marine algae, spirulina, sponge-based frozen foods, and high-quality angelfish pellets. With proper care, this fish makes a striking centerpiece in a large marine aquarium.
