Golden Spot Hogfish

Golden Spot Hogfish (Bodianus perditio) — a semi-aggressive species that is reef-safe with caution, admired for its brilliant golden-yellow spot near the gill plate, vibrant reddish/orange body coloration, large adult size, and active swimming behavior.

Males typically develop more intense coloration with a prominent golden spot and a bulkier body shape, while females/juveniles tend to have slightly duller or less pronounced coloration and a slimmer profile.

They reach about 20–24 inches in adulthood and should be housed in aquariums of at least 180–200 gallons. Provide ample live rock for hiding, open swimming space, and a secure lid since this species is an active swimmer and may jump.

Diet should consist of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, squid, clams, chopped fish, enriched pellets, and occasional live foods. They are carnivorous and will also help control small crustaceans in the aquarium. With proper care, the Golden Spot Hogfish makes a bold, striking, and hardy addition to a large marine aquarium, best suited for advanced hobbyists.
